Jack Smith
Jack L. “Hank” Smith, 73 years, of Bethlehem, died on April 5, 2012, surrounded by his family after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in 1938, Smith spent his life in the Lehigh Valley, working at Bethlehem Steel, Mack Trucks and Faulkner as an automobile mechanic and auto-body technician. He was a hard worker who loved to fish, hunt, eat his wife Pat’s cooking, listen to Hank Williams, and be with his family. He could build and fix almost anything, remodeled their beautiful home almost by himself and was proud of growing some of the biggest tomato plants in the county. Hank was a generous man who would help everyone he knew, from sharing the eggs his chickens laid to building his sister-in-law’s deck, and would only get angry if someone insisted on repaying him for his kindness. His family likes to think he’s fishing right now in Chesapeake Bay, catching a big one with a beer in his hand. A man of few words, he taught us what was right by living it. Smith is survived by his wife Patricia, as well as two adoring daughters, Christine Guro of Hellertown and Valarie Smith of Portland, Oregon, and three grandchildren, Julie Kolesnik of Bethlehem and Michael Kolesnik and Sean Guro of Hellertown. A public viewing will be held for Smith Monday from 10-11am, followed by a service at 11am, at the Downing Funeral Home at 1002 W. Broad Street in Bethlehem. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Luke’s Hospice.
