Dolores Ann (Evrard) Horvath, 93, passed away peacefully on April 6 at Fellowship Manor, Whitehall. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph F. Horvath Jr. who passed away in 1997. Born in Bethlehem on June 30, 1927, she was the 4th of 6 children of John (Doc) Evrard and Elizabeth (Lizzie Bisbing) Evrard. She resided in her beloved South Bethlehem for most of her life, spending the last ten years in Saylorsburg with her daughter Chris and son-in-law Joe.
A graduate of the Bethlehem Catholic Class of 1945, she took the secretarial course of study and worked at Lehigh University’s Admissions Office and at Bethlehem Steel just prior to her marriage. She was a stay-at-home wife, and mother to her four children, Elizabeth (George Kane) of Macungie, Joseph III (Leslie) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Christine (Joseph Deuel) of Saylorsburg, and John (Nina) of Austin, TX. Generous with her time with a love for driving, it was her pleasure to drive her parents and later her friends and neighbors to church and various appointments. We are sure Bethlehem had to add an extra van for Seniors when Mom moved to Saylorsburg.
A devout Catholic, she lived the Corporal Works of Mercy... feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead ...and incorporated the Spiritual Works of Mercy into her prayers. She cared for and nursed her mother, her father-in-law, and her husband, our Dad, during their final illnesses. She volunteered at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity Thrift Store, and frequently gave away her own gloves and umbrella rather than see someone face the cold and rain without any. She was a member of Holy Ghost Church, Bethlehem, and later, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville.
Mom loved Lehigh and Bethlehem Catholic football games, the muddier the better, and often said “I don’t cook, I don’t clean, I don’t bake, I just go bumming”, meaning she would rather be out and about than tied to the house. Nana “D” visited her grandchildren often and greatly enjoyed taking them places and watching them experience new things. She took bus trips with the Senior Groups of St. Ursula and St. Simon and Jude parishes. Well into her 80’s she attended Becahi class reunions and kept up with her high school friends.
She loved her family and Aunt Dolores was a fixture at extended family gatherings, where she was an avid pinochle player and exhibited her ‘gift of gab’ to one and all.
She is survived by her children, 8 grandchildren: Molly (David Crabbe), Meghan (Charles Greaves), Maureen, Katie (Rob Rice), and Peter Kane (Kelleyah), Tyler Horvath and Madison Horvath; 8 great-grandchildren: Charlie, William, Maeve and Maggie Crabbe, Delilah Greaves, and Ella, Teddy and Henry Rice; a step-grandson Christopher Supplee (Lauren) and their daughter, Alexandria. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will miss her wit and wisdom.
She was pre-deceased by favorite grandson, Collin Horvath and her siblings and in-laws: John and Stelle Evrard, Mary and Juby Fistner, Lindy and Helen Evrard, Carl and Joan Evrard, Theresa and Bill Scott, Frank and Helen Horvath, Mary and Tom Zondlo and Mike and Dot Horvath. She was saddened by the loss of nephews John, Jerry and Peter Evrard and John Fistner and by nieces Patty Barr, Mary Beth Burkhardt, and Jane Zakovitch.
A viewing will be held on Monday, April 12 from 9:30 to 10:30 with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 AM in Holy Ghost Church, 417 Carlton Avenue, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Internment to follow at Holy Savior Cemetery, Bethlehem. Arrangements are entrusted to Downing Funeral Home, Inc.
Mom supported charities with an emphasis on children and families. If you are so inclined, in lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Bethlehem Catholic (www.becahi.org), St Jude's Children's Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
